Foam vs. Microfiber Pads: Which Should You Load?

Foam and microfiber sound like a style choice — soft versus scratchy — but on a dual-action polisher they're two different cutting mechanisms, and mixing up when to reach for each is one of the more common ways a correction disappoints. Foam is the default in most enthusiasts' kits: forgiving, available across a full range from aggressive cutting foam to feather-soft finishing foam, and built around the familiar color-coded aggressiveness scale. Microfiber swaps the foam face for a napped fabric bonded to a foam core, and that fabric changes how the pad behaves against paint more than most spec sheets let on. This is a straight comparison of the two, not a case for one over the other, so you can load the pad that actually matches the defect in front of you.
What a foam pad actually is
A foam pad is a single molded disc of open- or closed-cell foam, sold across a density range from dense, aggressive cutting foam down to soft, low-cut finishing foam. Because the whole face is foam, the pad flexes evenly under pressure and conforms to curved panels, bumpers and body lines without much extra effort from you. What a microfiber pad actually is
A microfiber pad bonds a napped fabric face to a foam core rather than using foam all the way through. The fabric fibers grip and lift more aggressively than a foam face of a similar nominal cut rating, which is why microfiber pads are usually described as cutting a step harder than their closest foam equivalent. That extra bite is useful on paint with genuinely stubborn oxidation or deep swirls a foam pad struggles to clear in a reasonable number of passes, but the same fabric face leaves a coarser finish behind — one that almost always wants a foam finishing pad afterward to fully refine.

Cutting power
Microfiber cuts harder than foam of a similar rating, which is the whole reason it exists as a separate category. The napped fabric grips compound and paint differently than foam, clearing moderate-to-heavy defects — deep swirls, real oxidation — in fewer passes than a comparable foam cutting pad would need. Foam still has plenty of cutting range of its own at the aggressive end of its density scale; it just generally needs more passes, or a slightly heavier compound, to match what a microfiber pad clears in one.
Finish quality
This is where foam wins outright. A quality foam finishing pad, loaded with a fine polish, reliably refines a panel to a clean, swirl-free finish on its own. Microfiber's aggressive fabric face is built to remove material, not to jewel a finish, and it typically leaves its own fine marring behind — visible under bright light even after the defect it was clearing is long gone. Almost every workflow that starts with a microfiber cutting pad follows it with a foam finishing pad; skipping that step is the single most common reason a microfiber-corrected panel still looks hazy once it's dry.
Durability and lifespan
Foam pads wear evenly and are simple to clean — rinse or brush out spent compound, spin dry, and a foam pad holds its shape and density over many uses. Microfiber's fabric face traps compound and paint residue in its nap more readily than foam does, so it needs more thorough cleaning between panels, and the fibers themselves flatten and mat down with heavy use faster than foam's cell structure breaks down. Either pad lasts through a reasonable number of corrections when cleaned properly between panels, but microfiber generally needs replacing sooner under regular heavy use.
Heat build-up
Foam's even, flexible face spreads pressure and heat across a wider area of contact, which keeps a panel cooler through a normal working pass. Microfiber's fabric grips more aggressively, and that extra grip generates more localized heat faster, especially if you dwell too long in one spot — worth watching closely on thin factory clear coat or a panel that's already been resprayed. Neither pad removes the need for a dual-action polisher that holds speed under pressure rather than bogging down and letting heat build in one place.
Best use — which one should you actually load
Foam first, for almost everyone. Reach for microfiber only once you've confirmed foam genuinely can't clear a defect in a reasonable number of passes: heavy oxidation, deep swirls, or paint that's sat neglected for years. Even then, plan on a foam finishing pad and a fine polish as the step right after, since microfiber's own marring needs foam to clear it. And whichever pad face you load, match its aggressiveness to the compound running underneath it — a mismatched pad-and-compound pairing wastes both, regardless of which pad face you chose.
