How to Polish a Car, Step by Step
The full wash-to-wax method enthusiasts use to remove swirls and haze without burning through clear coat.

“Polishing a car” gets used loosely to mean anything from a five-minute spray wax to a full multi-stage correction, but the process that actually removes swirls, water spots and light scratches follows the same order every time, whether you are working with a basic all-in-one compound or finishing under a ceramic coating. Skip a step — decontaminate before you polish, tape before you compound, test-spot before you commit to a panel — and you either fail to remove the defects you are chasing or you create new ones on top of them. None of the individual steps below are difficult on their own; what actually separates a clean result from a frustrating one is doing them in order and not skipping the ones that feel optional, like the tape or the test spot. Below is the method in the order enthusiasts actually run it, from the first wash to the protective layer you finish on.
What you will need before you start
Gather everything first so you are not mid-panel searching the garage for a towel. Beyond soap, buckets and a hose, the correction-specific gear is:
- A pH-neutral car soap and a two-bucket wash setup
- A clay bar or clay mitt and a dedicated clay lubricant
- Painter’s tape for trim, badges and rubber seals
- A dual-action polisher and a couple of backing plates
- A set of polishing pads in at least two cut levels
- A rubbing compound to cut defects and a milder polish to refine the finish after
- Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) diluted with water in a spray bottle, plus plush microfiber towels
- A wax, sealant or coating to finish
Everything on this list keeps working for years of future washes and corrections — it is a one-time gear investment, not a per-car consumable, aside from the compound, polish and clay themselves getting used up.
The step-by-step method
- Wash the car thoroughly. Wash the wheels and wheel wells first, separately from the body, so brake dust never gets a chance to cross-contaminate your wash mitt. Rinse loose grit off the body first so it cannot drag across the paint in the wash bucket, then wash with a pH-neutral soap using a two-bucket method (one bucket of soap, one of rinse water for your mitt) to keep dragging swirl-causing dirt back onto the panel to a minimum. Dry with a clean, plush microfiber towel or an air blower rather than letting the car drip-dry in the sun.
- Decontaminate with a clay bar or mitt.Run the flat of your hand over a washed, dry panel. If it feels gritty rather than glass-smooth, bonded contamination is still there. Lubricate the panel generously, then glide the clay bar or mitt across in straight lines, re-lubricating often and folding the bar to a clean face as it picks up grime. This step removes what a wash alone cannot, and it has to happen before compounding or you are grinding contamination into the paint instead of lifting it off. Recheck with a fingertip once you have clayed a panel — it should now glide glass-smooth with no drag at all; if it still catches, go over that spot again before moving on.
- Tape off trim, badges and rubber seals.A spinning pad that catches a plastic trim edge or a rubber seal can burn or discolor it in seconds. Run painter’s tape along body lines next to trim, over emblems, and along window and door seals on any panel you are about to work. It takes ten minutes and it is the cheapest insurance on this whole list. Pull the tape off again once you finish that panel rather than leaving it on all day, since old tape adhesive baking in the sun is its own cleanup headache.
- Run a test spot.Pick one small, less visible area — a lower door panel or the trunk lid is typical — and run your compound-and-pad combination there at a modest speed before touching the rest of the car. Check the result in direct light: are the defects actually leveling out, or just hazing over? A test spot is how you confirm the pad, liquid and speed you picked will actually correct this specific paint before you commit hours to the wrong combination. Note the pad, product and speed combination that worked — that is now your setting for the rest of the car, not a one-off.
- Compound the defects out.Working one section at a time (roughly a two-foot-by-two-foot area), apply a few pea-sized drops of compound to the pad, spread it at a low speed, then work it at the machine’s recommended speed with light, even pressure until the product breaks down and the panel looks clearer. Keep the pad flat against the panel the entire time — tilting it concentrates pressure on one edge of the pad and can burn through clear coat in that exact spot. Overlap each pass by roughly half the pad’s width so you are not leaving thin, untouched strips between sections, and keep the machine moving continuously rather than letting it sit in one spot.
- Polish to refine the finish.A compound levels defects but can leave fine haze of its own (“micro-marring”) behind. A milder polish on a softer pad, worked the same way, refines that haze into the deep, clear gloss you are actually after. Some one-step products combine both jobs; if yours does, this step is already done. Step into direct sunlight or under a shop light periodically to check your progress — polish haze is far easier to spot in hard light than under a garage bulb.
- Wipe the panel down with diluted IPA. Compounds and polishes leave oily residue that can mask remaining defects and stop a wax or coating from bonding properly. A light wipe with an isopropyl-alcohol-and-water mix on a clean microfiber towel strips that residue so you can actually inspect your work, and so whatever you apply next bonds to bare paint. A towel that still comes away oily after a couple of wipes means there is more residue left than you think, so keep wiping fresh sections of the towel until it comes away clean.
- Protect what you just corrected. Freshly corrected paint has no defense against the next rainstorm or wash. Apply a wax for an easy, warm-looking layer you will reapply every couple of months, or step up to a ceramic coating if you want that protection to last far longer between applications. Buff off fully to a clean, non-hazy shine, then give the panel a quick rinse with a hose afterward to confirm you are getting the beading or sheeting behavior the product promises before moving on to the next panel.
How to tell it actually worked
The clearest test is the one you already ran during the test spot: stand back in direct sunlight and look across the panel at a shallow angle rather than straight down at it. Swirls and haze show up as a web-like pattern that catches the light; a properly corrected panel reflects a clean, unbroken line back at you instead. A fresh coat of protection will also visibly deepen the reflection compared with bare, just-corrected paint, which is a reasonable sign you are ready to move on to the next panel.
Safety notes that actually matter
- Always test spot first.Every step above assumes you have already confirmed your combination on a hidden panel — do not skip straight to the hood.
- Never dwell on a body line or edge. Clear coat is thinnest right on body lines, edges and around trim; lift the pad off, or reduce time and pressure noticeably, whenever you cross one.
- Keep the pad flat on the panel.Tilting the polisher concentrates all of the pad’s pressure on a small area and is the single most common way a beginner burns through clear coat.
- Work in the shade, on a cool panel. Direct sun flash-dries compound before it can finish working and makes it harder to judge your results accurately.
After the first pass
Once you have been through the sequence once, later sessions get faster: a car that is already corrected usually only needs the wash, a light decontamination check, and a protection top-up, not a full compound-and-polish pass.
