Polishing Pad Color Guide: What Each Color Actually Means
A color tells you roughly how aggressive a pad is — here's how to read one brand's convention, and why you shouldn't assume every brand uses it.

Why pads are color-coded at all
A polishing pad's foam density decides how aggressively it cuts, and density isn't something you can judge by looking at a pad on a shelf. Manufacturers solved that by dyeing the foam so a color tells you, at a glance, roughly where a pad sits between "removes heavy oxidation" and "adds a final jewel of gloss." It's a genuinely useful shorthand once you know a given brand's scheme — the problem, and the reason this guide exists, is that there is no single industry-wide standard. Two pads that are both "orange" from two different brands can sit at noticeably different points on the cutting-to-finishing scale.
The color chart, as one brand's example
Lake Country's foam pad lines are one of the most widely referenced color conventions in DIY detailing, so it's a reasonable brand to use as a worked example — as long as you read it as an example, not a universal key. Broadly, Lake Country runs from yellow (their most aggressive cutting foam, meant for severe oxidation and deep swirls) through orange (a medium-heavy cutting pad for moderate defects) to white (a light-cut polishing pad, moving toward sealants and fine polishes), with several supplementary colors — green, blue, gray, red and a super-soft gold — filling in finer gradations toward pure finishing and wax or sealant application.

Treat that table as illustrative, not gospel. Chemical Guys' Hex-Logic line, for example, uses the same rough yellow-to-black gradient — yellow for heavy cutting, orange for medium cutting, white for light polishing, black for finishing and sealant work — but it isn't the identical chart, and other brands reassign colors entirely. Before you buy, read the pad's printed or listed cut rating (sometimes called an aggression or density rating) rather than assuming a color means the same thing everywhere. Foam vs. microfiber: color doesn't apply the same way
Color-coding was built around foam pads, and it maps cleanly onto that whole cut-to-finish foam range. Microfiber pads are a different animal: a napped fabric face bonded to a foam core that cuts noticeably harder than foam of a similar nominal cut level, at the cost of leaving a coarser finish. Some microfiber pads borrow the same color language — an "orange" microfiber cutting pad, for instance — but don't assume a microfiber pad and a foam pad of the same color cut the same amount; microfiber is almost always the more aggressive of the two. Most people correcting their own car are better served starting with foam, which is more forgiving under uneven hand pressure and can cover the whole range on its own; microfiber earns its place mainly on paint with defects foam can't remove in a reasonable number of passes.
Matching color (aggressiveness) to your compound
A pad's color only tells half the story — the other half is what you load onto it, and the two decisions aren't independent. Running an aggressive cutting compound on a light, finishing-colored pad wastes the compound: the pad can't generate enough friction to let the abrasives break down and actually cut. Running a gentle finishing polish on a heavy cutting pad wastes the polish the same way in reverse — the pad's own aggressive cut overwhelms whatever refinement the product was supposed to add. The reliable habit is to match pad aggressiveness to compound aggressiveness first, then let the compound carry most of the correction while the pad's texture does the finishing work. Don't shop by color alone
Color is a starting shortcut, not a spec sheet. Two practical habits keep it from misleading you. First, always check a pad's actual listed cut or density rating against the color, especially when buying a brand you haven't used before — if the listing doesn't state one, that's a reason to look elsewhere before you buy blind. Second, keep pads from different brands visually separated once they're in your kit; a drawer full of orange, white and black pads from three different manufacturers looks organized but can quietly mix up three different aggressiveness scales if you're not tracking which pad came from where. A quick label on the backing or edge of each pad, noting the brand and its stated cut level, is a cheap habit that prevents grabbing the wrong pad mid-job.
Where color fits into the whole process
Pad color is one input among several in a full correction — alongside your polisher's throw, your backing plate size, and the compound loaded on the pad. None of those decisions happen in isolation: the right pad on the wrong plate, or the right compound on the wrong pad, undoes the benefit of getting the color right.
