How to Clean Polishing Pads
A clogged pad stops correcting and starts smearing. Here is the two-part routine that keeps a set of pads cutting from the first panel to the last.

A polishing pad has a working life measured in panels, not cars. Within a few minutes of contact it fills with spent compound, removed clear coat and whatever was left on the paint, and a saturated pad does not correct — it slides. Most people who conclude their compound "stopped working" halfway through a hood are actually describing a pad that needed cleaning ten minutes earlier.
There are two separate jobs here and it is worth being clear about which is which. On-the-fly cleaning happens every panel or two, takes about fifteen seconds, and exists to keep the pad cutting. A proper wash happens once, at the end, and exists to make the pad usable next time. Skipping the first ruins your results today. Skipping the second ruins the pads.
Cleaning on the fly, between panels
Do this every panel, or every second panel on a light polishing step. It takes seconds and it is the single highest-return habit in machine polishing.
- Brush it while it spins. With the machine on a low speed and the pad facing away from you and the car, hold a stiff nylon detailing brush against the face for a few seconds. The spent product flies off as dust. Wear eye protection and do this away from clean panels, because it goes everywhere.
- Or use compressed air. A short blast through the foam from the back pushes residue out of the cells rather than just off the surface. This is the gentlest option and the best one if you have a compressor.
- Or pat it on a clean microfiber. With the machine off, press the pad face firmly into a folded towel a few times. Least effective of the three, but it needs no equipment at all.
The tell that you have waited too long is the pad going slick and glossy instead of matt and slightly furry, and correction visibly slowing on a panel that was cutting fine ten passes ago. When you see that, stop and either clean it or swap to a fresh pad — continuing just polishes your own residue into the paint.
Swap, do not just clean
On-the-fly cleaning extends a pad's working stretch; it does not reset it. Every serious correction needs multiple pads in rotation, cutting pads especially, because firm foam clogs fastest and takes the most heat. Washing pads properly afterwards
Do this the same day. Compound left to cure in foam overnight sets hard, and the pad is much harder to recover the next morning.
- Soak in warm water with a dedicated pad cleaner or plain dish soap. Warm, not hot — heat is what softens the adhesive holding foam to its hook-and-loop backing. Give it fifteen to thirty minutes so the product releases rather than needing to be scrubbed out.
- Work the face gently with your fingers or a soft brush. Squeeze rather than wring. Twisting a wet pad is the fastest way to tear the foam away from its backing.
- Rinse until the water runs clear. Residual cleaner left in the foam interferes with the next product you load onto it.
- Squeeze out the excess, gently. Press between two folded towels rather than wringing.
A washing machine on a gentle, cool cycle works too, and plenty of people use one — put the pads in a mesh bag, skip fabric softener entirely, and accept that it is harder on the foam-to-backing bond than hand washing. Never use fabric softener on a polishing pad: it coats the foam with a residue that changes how product spreads and how the pad cuts.
Drying — where most pads actually die
Air dry, face up, flat, at room temperature. That is the whole instruction, and it is the one most often ignored.
A tumble dryer is the most reliable way to destroy a set of pads. The adhesive bonding foam to the hook-and-loop backing is heat-sensitive, and a dryer cycle softens it enough that the pad delaminates — sometimes in the dryer, sometimes mid-panel two weeks later at 4,000 OPM, which is considerably worse. A hair dryer, a radiator and direct summer sun are all versions of the same mistake. Give them overnight instead.
Store them dry, flat or face-up in a box, out of sunlight. Foam left compressed under weight for months takes a set and no longer sits flat on the plate.
When to stop cleaning and start replacing
Pads are consumables, and the cheerful truth is that a worn one costs you far more in time than a new one costs in money. Retire a pad when the foam has visibly compressed and no longer springs back, when the face has torn or crumbled at the edge, when any part of the foam has lifted from the backing, or when it no longer grips the plate firmly. A pad that shifts on the plate under load is a hazard, not just a poor performer.
Keep cutting pads and finishing pads separately once they have been used, and never finish with a pad that has had a heavy compound in it — trace abrasive stays in the foam through several washes and will put fine marring straight back into paint you have just refined.
