Polish or Compound First?
Compound comes first. The more useful question is whether you need it at all — and there is a five-minute test that answers it.

The short answer: compound first, then polish. Compound is the coarser product — it removes defects and leaves fine haze. Polish is the finer product — it removes that haze and produces gloss. Doing it the other way round means your polish work gets erased by the compound pass that follows it.
That is the whole ordering question, and it takes one line. The genuinely useful question is the one underneath it: do you need the compound step at all? Every compound pass permanently removes clear coat, and clear coat is finite. Getting this wrong in the cautious direction costs you an afternoon. Getting it wrong in the aggressive direction costs you paint you cannot get back.
The full order, top to bottom
- Wash. Nothing else happens on dirty paint — you are just grinding grit into it.
- Decontaminate. Iron remover, then clay if the paint still feels gritty. Skipping this drags embedded particles across the panel under a pad. See do you need to clay bar before polishing.
- Compound — only if the test spot says so.
- Polish — to refine what the compound left, or as the only correction step if the defects were light.
- Panel wipe — if a coating is going on, this removes polishing oils.
- Protect — wax, sealant or ceramic coating.
Steps 3 and 4 are the ones people reorder. Steps 1, 2 and 6 are the ones people skip, and skipping 2 does more damage than getting 3 and 4 backwards.
The test spot that decides it
Pick a low-visibility panel — the lower half of a rear door, or a section of trunk lid. Tape off a section about two feet square. Then work it with the least aggressive combination you own: a polish on a finishing or polishing pad, at a moderate speed, for the number of passes the manufacturer recommends. Wipe it down and inspect under bright, direct light.
- Defects gone — you do not need a compound. Polish the car and stop. You have just saved several microns of clear coat.
- Improved but not gone — step up one level: a more aggressive pad with the same polish, or a one-step compound on a polishing pad. Re-test.
- Barely changed — now you need a cutting compound, and a polish afterwards to clear its haze.
This escalation order — mildest first, step up only when proven necessary — is the single most important habit in paint correction. It is also the one most tutorials skip, because escalating slowly makes for boring video.
The one case where the rule inverts
Genuinely oxidized, chalky paint is the exception. There, the conservative approach actively misleads you: a mild polish removes so little of the dead layer that the panel barely changes, which looks identical to "this paint is beyond saving." On chalky paint, test-spot with something aggressive enough to prove the paint responds, then work back down. What changes if you are pairing them differently
Pad, not just product
You have two aggressiveness dials, and most people only turn one. A polish on a cutting pad is more aggressive than a polish on a finishing pad; a compound on a finishing pad is milder than a compound on a cutting pad. Stepping up the pad before stepping up the product is often the smaller, safer increment. The pad color guide maps the range.
One-step products
A well-formulated one-step carries enough abrasive to remove light swirls and enough refinement to finish in the same pass. On ordinary daily-driver paint that collapses steps 3 and 4 into one, which is why we recommend a one-step as the default starting point for most people rather than a two-bottle system. Wax and sealant come last, always
Wax and sealant add a protective layer on top. Compounding or polishing over them just strips them off — you have paid for the product and removed it in the same session. Common ordering mistakes
- Compounding a dirty car. Every particle on the paint becomes an abrasive under the pad.
- Polishing then compounding. The compound pass erases the polish work entirely.
- Compounding the whole car because two panels needed it. Correct the panels that need it, polish everything.
- Waxing between compound and polish. The polish removes the wax; the wax interferes with the polish.
- Skipping the test spot. Paint hardness varies enough between cars that nobody can tell you the right combination in advance.
