Short answer: no. A ceramic coating has to bond directly to your clear coat, and wax is a barrier layer sitting on top of that clear coat. Apply a coating over wax and it will appear to work — it will spread, flash and buff off exactly as expected, and the car will bead beautifully for a few weeks. Then the wax underneath breaks down on its normal schedule, and it takes your expensive coating with it.
That failure mode is the reason this question matters so much. It does not announce itself at application time. It announces itself three months later when a coating rated for years stops beading, and the owner concludes the product was fake.
Why the bond is the whole story
A ceramic coating is a silica resin that cross-links as it cures and forms a hard, semi-permanent film chemically anchored to the surface it was laid on. The strength of that anchor is what buys you multi-year durability.
Wax and sealants are sacrificial by design. Carnauba wax is a soft, natural layer meant to wear away over weeks or months; a synthetic sealant lasts longer but is still a consumable film. What has to come off before a coating
Everything that is not clear coat. In practice that means four categories, and most cars have all four:
- Wax and sealant. Whatever you last applied, plus anything a car wash added without telling you — most automated washes apply a spray protectant.
- Bonded contamination. Iron particles, tar and industrial fallout that washing does not remove. This needs an iron remover and a clay bar; see how to clay bar a car.
- Polishing oils. Every compound and polish leaves oils behind, and several are formulated to temporarily fill fine defects. A coating applied over them bonds to oil.
- Dressing overspray. Tire and trim dressings migrate onto lower panels far more than people expect.
How to strip it properly
- Wash with a stripping shampoo. Not your normal pH-neutral maintenance soap — that one is specifically designed not to remove protection. Use a dedicated strip wash, or a stronger degreasing shampoo, and let it dwell.
- Chemically decontaminate. An iron remover dissolves embedded ferrous particles that clay will otherwise drag across the paint.
- Clay the paint. This is what removes the bonded contamination washing cannot. The paint should feel like glass through a plastic bag afterwards.

- Panel wipe, immediately before coating. A dedicated solvent wipe removes polishing oils and any last residue. Do it panel by panel, just ahead of the coating, and do not touch the paint with bare hands afterwards — skin oils are residue too.
The water test that tells you it worked
Spray a stripped panel with water. If the water beads up and runs off, there is still protection on it and you are not ready. If it sheets out flat and wets the whole surface evenly, the paint is bare. It is a ten-second check that saves a coating.
A dry panel gives you a second signal: bare, decontaminated clear coat feels slightly grabby under a clean microfiber rather than slick. Slickness at this stage means something is still there.
The one exception, and it runs the other way
You cannot coat over wax, but you can absolutely wax or top over a coating — and many people do. A ceramic topper or SiO2 spray applied over a cured coating boosts hydrophobics and adds a sacrificial layer that takes the wear instead of the coating itself. What about ceramic sprays over wax?
Different product, different answer. A ceramic spray is itself a sacrificial layer measured in months, so applying one over an existing wax does not destroy a multi-year investment — the two just wear away together and the result is less durable than a spray on bare paint.
