Ceramic Coating vs PPF

One is a chemical layer measured in microns, the other is physical armor you can peel off. They solve different problems, and the comparison usually gets that wrong.

The comparison people usually make between a ceramic coating and paint protection film is which one "protects better," and it is the wrong question — like asking whether a raincoat or a helmet protects better. A ceramic coating is a chemical layer bonded to the clear coat, a few microns thick, that changes how the surface behaves. PPF is a thermoplastic urethane film, physically thicker than the paint's clear coat, laid over panels as a sacrificial shield. They defend against different things, they cost wildly different amounts, and the honest answer to "which should I get?" depends entirely on which failure you are trying to prevent.

What a ceramic coating actually does

A coating cures into a hard, hydrophobic layer chemically bonded to the clear coat. What you get is chemical resistance — bird droppings, bug remains, tree sap, industrial fallout and acid rain get far less opportunity to etch — plus dramatically easier washing, because contamination cannot key into the surface, and the gloss and water beading that sell the product in the first place.

What you do not get is physical protection. A coating is measured in microns; a stone off a truck tire at highway speed does not notice it. Coatings do not stop rock chips, they do not stop a shopping cart, and marketing that implies scratch resistance is describing resistance to very light marring, not to impacts. What PPF actually does

PPF is measured in thousandths of an inch rather than microns — genuinely thicker than the clear coat underneath it. That thickness is the point: it absorbs stone impacts that would otherwise chip paint, and quality films are self-healing, so light swirls and wash marring close up with heat from the sun or warm water.

It is also expensive and demanding. Installation is a skilled trade involving heat, tension and precise trimming around complex panel geometry, which is why serious DIY attempts on full panels usually end with a re-do at a shop. Coverage is typically sold in tiers — front bumper and hood leading edge, full front end, or full car — and the price climbs steeply with each.

Where each one fails

A coating's failure mode is time. It gradually loses hydrophobicity and gloss, washing gets less easy, and eventually it needs stripping and reapplying. It is a gentle decline rather than a cliff.

PPF's failure modes are more visible: older or cheaper films can yellow with UV exposure, edges can lift if trimmed badly or pressure-washed too close, and removal after many years can be laborious. Modern films have largely fixed the yellowing problem, but the installer's skill matters enormously and there is no way to check it from a price list.

Why the answer is often both

They stack, and stacking is what most well-protected cars actually have: film over the impact zones — bumper, hood leading edge, mirrors, fender edges — and a ceramic coating over everything, film included. The film handles physical damage where physical damage happens; the coating handles chemistry, gloss and ease of washing across the whole car and adds hydrophobicity to the film, which does not have much of its own.

The order is not negotiable: correct the paint, install the film, then coat over the top. Coating first wastes the coating, because the film is applied to the paint surface and anything on that surface is either removed or compromises adhesion.

Which one should you buy

Buy a coating if your car is a daily driver, you want it easier to wash and glossier, you care about etching from bird lime and sap, and you are cost-conscious — a DIY coating is one of the highest-return products in car care. Buy PPF if rock chips are your actual concern — high highway mileage, a new car you intend to keep, a color that is expensive to blend, or a lease with a damage clause. Nothing else prevents chips, and no coating is a substitute.

Buy both if the budget allows and the car justifies it. Film on the front, coating everywhere.

Does ceramic coating protect against rock chips?
No. A coating is a few microns thick and offers essentially no impact protection. Paint protection film is the only product that meaningfully prevents rock chips, because it is physically thicker than the clear coat it sits on.
Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
Neither is better — they protect against different things. PPF stops physical damage; a coating stops chemical etching, resists UV and makes the car far easier to wash. Many well-protected cars have film on the impact zones and a coating over everything.
Can you put ceramic coating over PPF?
Yes, and it is the standard order. Coating the film adds hydrophobicity and gloss the film does not have much of on its own, and makes it easier to clean. Always install the film first, then coat over the top.
How long does PPF last compared to ceramic coating?
Quality film is generally rated for around a decade, while consumer ceramic coatings are typically in the two-to-five year range depending on product and maintenance. Both figures assume the paint was properly prepared before application.
Can I install PPF myself?
Realistically, no. Film installation requires heat, controlled tension and precise trimming around complex panel shapes, and mistakes are expensive because the material is consumed. Coatings, by contrast, are genuinely DIY-friendly on a well-prepared car.
